Search Engine Optimization Basics

Search engines such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo provide search results where websites are shown and ranked based on what each search engine considers to be most relevant to the search request. These results are unpaid or often referred to as “organic”. A higher ranking in search results pages (SERPS) correlates to a corresponding increase in traffic. The importance of being highly ranked cannot be overstated as Page 1 results historically garner up to 90 percent of all traffic from the average search. Despite the proliferation of paid ads (also known as pay per click or PPC) the majority of web traffic comes from organic search.

What is Search Engine Optimization?

Search Engine Optimization (also known as “SEO”) is the process of developing and maintaining a website in such a way as to make the site rank highly in organic search engine results for keywords or keyword phrases that are relevant to a business or organization. Keywords are those words which someone might use when searching for a particular service or product. While as a whole the SEO subject can be daunting we like to think of it as two distinct parts:

  • On-Site Optimization – This is what your site is saying about your organization to the world. Think of it as your getting dressed for a job interview or a big night out on the town. You want to look your best and present yourself in the most positive light. On-Page optimization includes appropriate and meaningful attention paid to:
    • Search engine friendly URLs
    • Title Tags
    • Page Descriptions
    • Thoughtful use of H1, H2 and H3 tags
    • Alt tags on images
    • Quality content
    • Schema and markup
    • Internal linking structure
    • Quick loading time for the site, particularly images
    • Mobile friendly (also known as “responsive”)
    • No duplicate content
    • An XML sitemap
    • Domain name age
  • Off-Site Optimization – This is what the world is saying about your organization. Again, use the analogy of an interview or a night out on the town. The words “great job!” or “looking good” generally mean you have been successful in your “On-Site Optimization”. Important factors in Off-Site optimization include:
    • Consistency of your name, address, phone number (NAP) in citations including a physical address
    • Backlinks to your site from sites with high domain authority
    • Quantity of linking domains
    • Link/domain ratio
    • Reviews signals on directory sites, Google +, LinkedIn, etc.
    • Social signals from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube
